What is order fulfillment?

Order fulfillment is the entire process from when a sale of a product is made all the way through the delivery of the product to the customer. This process covers steps such as receiving, processing, picking, packing, and shipping a product from an online e-commerce store to the end customer.

What Is The Receiving Stage of Order Fulfillment?

During the receiving stage, brands receive products from their suppliers or warehouses. This is a critical stage of the order fulfillment process because there is a handover of responsibility. Before accepting the shipment, the receiving team needs to:

  • Check the quantity of goods against the initial purchase order
  • Inspect the inventory for any damage to the products
  • Enter the SKUs into their inventory management system, warehouse management system or 3PL Software system to ensure visibility over the products
  • Apply barcodes or SKUs if the manufacturer hasn’t already provided them
  • Directed putaway through smart and flexible putaway algorithms and rules.

What Is The Storage Stage of Order Fulfillment?

During the storage stage of order fulfillment, your team shelves the products. Since the goods have been entered into the system, your team will have full visibility over the products while they are stored in your facility. Managers handle the storage stage of the order fulfillment process in their own ways.

In some warehouses, a product’s SKU determines where it’s stored in the warehouse. All products with that SKU may sit in one bin. This way, workers know exactly which location stores a specific category of items.

Other warehouses with more sophisticated systems take an “organized chaos” approach to inventory storage. Instead of assigning designated locations for products, every shelf or bin has a barcode and workers place items on any shelf during the putaway process. When a worker places the item on a shelf, they scan both the item and the shelf. This way, when it’s time to pick the item, the worker can find it again.

What Is The Processing Stage of Order Fulfillment?

Order processing begins once a customer order comes in from any one of several channels, including:

  • Online stores using tools like Magento, Shopify, WooCommerce
  • Point-of-sale (POS) at a brick-and-mortar store
  • Third-party marketplaces (e.g., Amazon)

Once the order comes in, it should be pushed to the order management system (OMS), which creates a pick order. The longer it takes for the order to move from the sales channel to the warehouse, the longer the order fulfillment process takes.

Businesses can introduce significant efficiencies by integrating their various sales channels with their order management software.

Logiwa with multi-warehouse functionality also supports this effort. Large operations can link their sales channels to their entire network of warehouses. This way, if they’re out of stock at the default location, the order will be instantly pushed to another warehouse so a sale is never lost.
