Space Utilization Calculator
Space Utilization Formula:
Using the formula
We’ll use cubic feet (ft³) as the unit of volume measurement:
-
Total Warehouse Storage Volume (The total available space where inventory can be stored, excluding aisles, offices, and staging areas): 100,000 ft³
-
Volume of Inventory Stored (The actual combined cubic volume of all stock currently in storage locations): 72,500 ft³
Calculation
We apply the formula using these figures:
Space Utilization = (72,500 ft³ / 100,000 ft³) x 100
= 72.50
The result is a Space Utilization Rate of 72.50%.
Warehouse Space Utilization Calculator
Explanation of
the formula
This calculator shows you exactly what percentage of your total warehouse storage volume is actively being used to hold inventory.
Think of it this way: If your warehouse is a large box, this metric tells you how full that box is. It’s the most direct way to see if you are paying for empty air or using your space efficiently.
Tracking your space utilization is crucial for cost control and efficiency.
Your warehouse space is one of your biggest operating expenses (whether you rent or own).
- A low utilization score means you are wasting money on unused space. You are paying for rent, heating, lighting, and taxes for empty shelves and aisles.
- A high utilization score generally means you are maximizing your investment and getting the most value out of every square foot you pay for.
